About St. Joseph's
A proud CEIST school with a rich history of providing holistic, Catholic education in Rochfortbridge since 1948. We are committed to developing the full potential of each student in a caring, respectful, and inclusive community.
Our History: A Legacy of Mercy Education
Founded in 1948 by the Sisters of Mercy, St. Joseph's Secondary School has been a cornerstone of education in Rochfortbridge for over seven decades.
- 1948: The school opened its doors, inspired by the vision of Catherine McAuley and the Mercy tradition of compassion, excellence, and service.
- 1984: The current main building was opened, designed for an enrolment of 450 students.
- 1990: A new Sports Hall was added, reflecting the school's commitment to physical education and holistic development.
- 2007: The school joined CEIST (Catholic Education an Irish Schools Trust), continuing its Catholic ethos within a wider network of Mercy schools.
- 2024: Planning permission was granted for a major redevelopment, including a new three-storey building to serve over 1000 students.
Our Ethos: Learning in a Caring Community
At St. Joseph's, we are dedicated to developing conditions for learning in a caring and safe environment, where everyone is respected, listened to, and enabled to approach life with confidence.
Our school ethos, rooted in the Catholic/CEIST tradition, promotes:
- Inclusion: Welcoming students of all backgrounds and abilities.
- Generosity of Spirit: Fostering kindness, empathy, and service to others.

- Compassion: Building a community where everyone feels valued and supported.
A CEIST School
St. Joseph's is proud to be part of CEIST (Catholic Education an Irish Schools Trust), a network of over 100 Catholic secondary schools across Ireland.
CEIST schools are inspired by the vision of our founders - the Sisters of Mercy, the Presentation Sisters, the Daughters of Charity, the Sisters of the Christian Retreat, and the Sisters of St. John of God. We share a common mission to provide a holistic, faith-based education that empowers young people to become compassionate, resilient, and socially aware citizens.
The five characteristic spirits of a CEIST school are:
Compassion
Respect & Dignity
